Historical and Substantive Contextualization of Qur’anic Translation by Marmaduke Pickthall and Abdullah Yusuf Ali in the Hermeneutics of Qur’anic Translation

Through a comparative study of the work of Pickthalldan Ali in the context of surah al-Ikhlās and the results of its translation, this study seeks to reconcile the philosophical hermeneutics in the field of the translation of the Qur'an used by both. They are two figures whose translations of the Qur'an into English are very much considered and used by many Muslims. They in their work also interestingly present the context of the surah right before translating the verses of the Qur'an. This research is a type of literature review with the main data source in the form of direct works of both, Pickthall with his work entitled "The Meaning of the Glorious Koran" and Ali with his work entitled "The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an ". In addition, supporting data is also used by looking for references related to the theme of discussion in books, journals and others. The data that has been obtained is presented through a descriptive method and analyzed by the content analysis method. The results of the study show that there is a difference in the tendency of the way to explain the context of the surah by Pickthall and Ali, namely that Pickthall is interested in the dimension of historical context while Ali is in the substantive context. This tendency also has a positive effect on their translation results. Finally, the contextualization of the surah is proposed to be a mediator between the rhetorical prepositions of the Qur'an and the often hidden implications of meaning.
