Abstract

Abstract: The term ghulul can be interpreted in our current language as corruption, this activity is one of the irresponsible actions and in Islam this is frowned upon, because this attitude is very detrimental to others. This often occurs among officials or employees who work in government with the aim of taking personal gain that is not their own right. The cause of this occurrence is because the person is greedy and never satisfied, however, other causes can vary from person to person. The goal to be achieved in this scientific work is to understand the meaning of ghulul in the Qur’an and to understand the interpretation of the ghulul verse according to Fazlur Rahman’s theory of interpretation. The method used in this research is the thematic method. Nashruddin Baidan, in his book entitled Methodology of Interpretation of the Qur’an, explained that what is meant by the thematic method is discussing the verses of the Qur’an according to a predetermined theme or title. All related verses are collected. Then, they are studied in depth and thoroughly from various related aspects, such as asbab al-nuzul, vocabulary, and so on. The results of this study are ghulul in the Qur’an, explaining the behavior of embezzlement of assets known today as corruption. According to Fazlur Rahman’s interpretation theory, the understanding of the meaning of ghulul in the time of the Prophet was known as the term spoils of war (ghanimah) illegally, namely taking part of the ghanimah before it was officially distributed by those more entitled to distribute the ghanimah, such as the Prophet or warlords. Meanwhile, the understanding of ghulul in the present day includes acts of corruption, abuse of office, stealing state funds without the knowledge of others and all forms of betrayal of public trust.
