The Message Of Peace In The Qur’an: A Thematic Analysis Of The Concepts Of As-Salam And Al-Islah

Abstract

The Qur’an, as a book of guidance (hudan) and clarification (bayyināt), emphasizes the importance of peace through the concepts of as-salām (freedom from conflict), as-ṣalāḥ (peace), and al-iṣlāḥ (reconciliation or restoration of relationships). These concepts are applied in three main contexts: (1) disputes over wills (QS. Al-Baqarah: 180–182), where justice serves as the solution to prevent imbalance of rights; (2) internal conflicts among Muslims (QS. Al-Hujurat: 9–10), addressed through mediation and firm action against wrongdoing while upholding the principle of brotherhood (ukhuwah); and (3) universal peace (QS. Al-Qasas: 77), which begins with the individual, extends to the family, and ultimately reaches the wider society through sincerity and a balance between worldly life and the hereafter. This study demonstrates that the Qur’an not only provides a theoretical framework for peace but also offers practical guidance grounded in justice, compassion, and social responsibility, requiring the active involvement of individuals, religious leaders, and social institutions to achieve a harmonious life in accordance with Islamic teachings.
