The Meaning of Zhān in Hamka’s Perspective: An Analysis of Creed and Social Dimensions in Tafsir Al-Azhar

Abstract

Abstract: The issue of zhᾱn or prejudice is very important to understand, because zhᾱn is something that arises in the mind and heart which sometimes gives rise to positive and negative results. When zhᾱn or prejudice dominates the mind, a person tends to interpret things narrowly, closes himself off from the truth, and is easily provoked by information that is not necessarily true. The impact, zhᾱn not only damages relationships between individuals or groups, but can also distance a person from the noble values ​​of religion itself, such as justice, truth, and the mercy of Allah SWT. The goal to be achieved is to understand the verses about zhᾱn in the context of social life and the faith or spirituality of Muslims based on Hamka's perspective in his book Tafsir Al-Azhar so that it becomes a good understanding with the hope that someone is able to guard and manage the mind from zhᾱn or bad prejudice that can even lead to sin. The method used in this study is thematic character. The results of this study are in the context of faith zhᾱn is interpreted as a strong belief in the teachings of Allah. It's not prejudice, conjecture, or blind imitation based solely on lust. In a social context, zhᾱn means prejudice and sin that can sever the bonds of friendship between two good people.
